New words
split · to divide into parts or groupsexplore · to look around to learn about a placeappreciate · to feel thankful for somethingfriendship · a close and kind relationship between friendssupport · to help and encourage someonedisagree · to think differently from someone
Explanation
Read Chapter Two of the second serial story on pages 79–80 of your book. First think about the warm-up question, then read, and then answer the questions about values. We learn our words with new examples. To split is to divide into parts: the teacher splits the class into three groups. To explore is to look around and learn. To appreciate is to feel thankful: I appreciate my friend’s support. Friendship is a close and kind relationship; to support someone is to help and encourage him or her. Friends sometimes disagree, and that is normal. A good friend listens, says what she thinks politely and looks for a plan that is fair. When you read, ask: Who showed friendship? How did the characters solve a disagreement? Use the context to guess the words in bold, and then check them.
