Different but connected: words from a story chapter
Read Chapter One of the second serial story on pages 65–66 of your book. First read the warm-up question about an adventure and think about it. After the chapter, try the questions about values. We learn the words with our own examples. To appreciate something is to see its value and feel thankful: I appreciate my grandmother’s help. To explore is to look around and learn about a place: the scouts explore the old market. Freedom is the power to choose what you do, for example the freedom to choose a book. A compass is a tool with a needle that shows direction, for example north. The sky is the space above us. When we read a story about people who are different but connected, we ask: How do differences help them? How do they show respect? Use the words around a new word to guess its meaning.
| Word | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| appreciate | I appreciate your help. | feel thankful |
| explore | We explore the old market. | look around to learn |
| freedom | I have the freedom to choose a hobby. | the power to choose |
| compass | A compass shows north. | a tool that shows direction |
| sky | The sky is blue today. | the space above us |
Explorer talk. With a grown-up plan a short walk around your street. Before you go, make a list of three things you want to learn about. After the walk, explain what you found out. Use explore and appreciate in your sentences.
