Curious and fair: words from a story chapter
Today’s reading is a story chapter in your book. Read Chapter One of the serial story on pages 20–21 and think about the people in it. Then use our own sentences to learn the words. When we meet a new word in a story, we can use the context: the words around it. A curious person asks questions because she wants to learn. A passionate person loves something so much that he works hard at it. Permission is a yes from a parent, a teacher or an owner: we ask for it before we use something that is not ours, for example before we download a program on a family computer. Fair means the same rules for everybody. Your identity is what makes you you: your name, your ideas, your hobbies. Special means good in a way that is different from the usual. Good readers also ask values questions: what should a person do when she wants to try something new but is not sure it is safe? A kind answer is: ask a grown-up first.

Story talk. After reading the chapter, ask a grown-up: What did you like? What do you think about the person who makes the choice? What is one thing you admire? Write your three best answers in short sentences. Use at least two of today’s six words.
