Writing an email about art, and a check-up

English Preparatory 2 Term 1, Unit 4: pp. 65–71
GoalWrite a short email to a friend about a kind of art with because, so, but and although, then do a short check-up.
New words
greeting · the first words of an email, such as Hiclosing · the last words of an email, such as Write back soondetail · one small fact in a textstyle · a way of making or doing somethingclub · a group of people who meet for a hobbyexhibition · a show of artworks
Explanation

An email to a friend is informal. Plan it in five parts: a greeting (Hi …, How are you?), the reason for writing (I’m writing to tell you about …), two or three details with connectors (because, so, but, although), a question (What do you think? Do you …?) and a closing (Write back soon! Talk to you later!). Use short, simple sentences and a friendly voice. Do not put a real email address or a real name in a model: use [friend’s name] and [your name]. A good email of this size has about 60 to 80 words (up to 100 if you can). Read it aloud and check that each connector fits: because gives a reason, so gives a result, but and although show a contrast.

Worked examples

Hi [friend’s name], How are you? I’m writing to tell you about our school art club. We meet every Tuesday, and we make posters and clay animals. Last week I painted a colorful fish because I love the sea. Although I was nervous, I showed it to the class, so now I feel braver. What do you think? Do you have an art club too? Write back soon! [your name]

Read a model email. A grown-up reads it aloud.
Find: the greeting (Hi [friend’s name], How are you?), the question (What do you think?) and the closing (Write back soon!).
Check-up. Choose the best word: The gallery will ___ the paintings next week. (display / deserve). The answer is display.
Now you. Choose an art you like (painting, drawing, pottery, music). Say your first two sentences for an email about it.
Class activity

Email plan. Write a plan with a grown-up: greeting, reason for writing, two details with because or so, a question and a closing. Then write the email (60 to 80 words, up to 100 if you can) to an imaginary friend. Read it aloud and check the connectors.
