Mobile devices for learning
ICT P6 Term 1, Theme 1: pp. 30–33
GoalDescribe how mobile devices help learning and name the problems they can cause.
New words
QR code · a square pattern that a camera can read to open informationdistraction · something that pulls your attention away from your taskapp · a program made for a mobile devicebenefit · a good result that helps you
Explanation
Mobile devices can help in learning. A phone can record a short video or take a photo for a project, with permission from anyone who is in it. A teacher may print a QR code, and with a grown-up helping, a camera reads it and opens the teacher’s video, audio or text. Some apps help a person who cannot speak: a child touches a picture and the device says the word aloud. Other tools help someone plan tasks and manage time. But there are problems. A device can pull your attention away from the lesson, because games and messages are only a touch away. Pupils may talk face to face less, and think less if they only copy what they find. Small screens make reading and graphs hard. Like any tool, a mobile device is good or bad depending on how we use it. Then the family and the teacher can agree on the rules.
Benefit

less talking face to face
apps that speak for a child who cannot speak
small screens make reading and graphs hard
planning tasks and time
copying instead of thinking
Worked examples
Habiba cannot speak aloud. Her tablet has a board of pictures: she touches the picture of a glass of water and the device says ‘I would like water, please.’ She can ask for what she needs by herself.
The teacher puts a QR code on the board. The picture shows a box labelled ‘QR code’. A grown-up uses a camera to read it and a short video opens. Children should never scan a code on their own.
Seif has a quiz tomorrow. His phone buzzes with a game message. He has to choose: open the game now or finish the revision first. This is a distraction problem.
Class activity
Pros and cons. Draw two columns: ‘Good for learning’ and ‘Problem’. Write three items in each, using your own ideas. Then choose the biggest problem and write a rule your class could follow to solve it.
Practice
1
Name one benefit of mobile devices for learning.
For example: short videos for a project, or an app that speaks for a child.
2
Name one problem.
For example: games and messages pull attention away.
3
Who should scan a QR code with a camera: the child alone or with a grown-up?
With a grown-up.
4
How can an app help a child who cannot speak?
He touches a picture and the device says the word aloud.
