Three places to search
There are three main places to search. A search engine is fast and gives millions of results from all over the web. Anyone can publish a page, so you must check each result yourself. A database is a stored collection, for example of magazine and newspaper articles. People check what goes into it, and schools often give free access. In Egypt, a free online library for people in Egypt works like a general database. A library catalogue is a database of everything one library owns, including its e-books. It tells you if the book is on the shelf and where. Choose the place to match your question. For a quick idea, use a search engine, with a grown-up. For an article written by experts, use a database. For a book you can borrow, use the catalogue. Results are like fruit in a shop: some are fresh and some are not, so look closely before you take it.
| Place | What it finds | Who checks it | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| search engine | web pages | you | a quick idea |
| database | articles and facts | the people who store it | expert articles |
| library catalogue | books and e-books of one library | the library | a book to borrow |
Match the question to the place. Write each question on a paper strip: (a) the newest research on camels; (b) a quick idea for a poster picture; (c) whether the library has a book about the Nile. Put each strip under search engine, database or catalogue. Explain your choice to a partner.
