New words
e-commerce · buying and selling goods and services on the internetelectronic trading · buying and selling stocks and bonds through trusted official websitesstock · an equal part of the ownership of a companybond · a loan to a company that it promises to pay back with a little extra
Explanation

Now review the middle of Theme 3. E-commerce is buying and selling goods and services online, and electronic trading is buying and selling stocks and bonds through trusted, official websites. A stock makes you a part-owner of a company; a bond makes you a lender. Both can have risks, and nobody can promise the future. Careful shoppers use three research tools: a search engine, a comparison website and reviews, remembering that some reviews are fake. An educational service provider is an organisation that supports learning, such as an online library or an online museum. We write to it formally, in seven parts. Real-time communication, for example a video conference, reaches everyone while it happens. Remember the meeting rules: a grown-up creates the meeting, the link is shared only with invited people, and you mute your microphone when you are not speaking. Children do not buy or invest; here we only practise words and opinions.

Pairs. E-commerce and electronic trading both happen on the internet, but e-commerce is about buying goods and services, while trading is about stocks and bonds.

Opinion with a reason. Mariam says: ‘If I were a grown-up I would prefer a bond, because I would be a lender and the company promises to pay back.’ Youssef says: ‘I would prefer a stock, because I would like to be a part-owner, but I know it is riskier.’ Both give a reason.

a video meeting is…real-time communication
Short answers. One research tool for shopping: a comparison website. One educational service provider: an online library. The type of communication in a video meeting: real-time communication.
Class activity

Quick-fire cards. In pairs, write ten question cards from Weeks 18–20 (for example ‘What is a bond?’, ‘Name one shopping research tool’, ‘What should you do with the microphone when you are not speaking?’). Shuffle them, take turns to draw a card and answer in one sentence. Then each write a two-line opinion: stocks or bonds, with a reason. Nobody buys anything; this is only about understanding.
