GoalPlan and present an honest picture about an environmental cause, and save it as a picture file with a clear name.
New words
cause · a problem or goal that people care about and work forJPEG · a common type of picture filefile name · the name that tells you what is inside a filehonest edit · an edit that does not mislead, with the change explained
Explanation
Pictures can carry a message. To make an image for a talk about an environmental cause, plan before you edit. One: choose the cause, for example saving water or keeping streets clean. Two: decide what viewers should think and feel, such as ‘I want to help’. Three: choose an image that gets this across, and sketch two or three ideas. Four: show your sketches to a partner and use the feedback to improve them. When the picture is ready, save a copy as a picture file type such as JPEG, and give it a clear name that says what it is, like save-water-poster.jpg, not just image1. Finally, present it and ask your classmates what they think it says. Be honest: tell viewers what you changed. Remember Week 17: an edited picture can mislead if people think it is real. A short note such as ‘Edited picture: two pictures combined to show an idea’ keeps everyone fairly informed.

A plan for a water poster. Cause: saving water. Feeling: ‘I should close the tap’. Image idea: a tap with a drop that grows into a puddle, then a closed tap with a smile.
File name
Clear?
save-water-poster.jpg
yes
image1.jpg
no
final-final-2.jpg
no
File names. Three files hold the same poster. The name save-water-poster.jpg tells you what it is. The name image1.jpg says nothing. The name final-final-2.jpg is confusing.
An honest label. Farida blends a photo of a river with a drawing of fish to show how a clean river could look one day. Under the picture she writes: ‘Edited picture: the fish were added to show an idea.’ Nobody is misled.
Class activity
Message in a picture. Choose an environmental cause (saving water, keeping streets clean, planting trees). On paper write the cause, what viewers should think and feel, and sketch two image ideas. Show them to a partner and write one change they suggest. Then write a clear file name for your finished poster and a one-line honest label that tells what was edited. Present your final sketch to the class and ask what it says.
Practice
1
Why should you plan before you edit a picture?
To know the cause and the message, and choose an image that gets it across.
2
Which is a better file name: image1.jpg or river-clean-up.jpg?
river-clean-up.jpg, because it says what the file is.
3
What does JPEG tell you about a file?
That it is a picture file of a common type.
4
How can you be honest when you show an edited picture?
Say or write what you changed, so nobody thinks it is real.
