My online safety plan

ICT P6 Term 1, Theme 2: pp. 58–61
GoalWrite a personal online safety plan and a short letter to a family member.
New words
plan · a list of steps made before a problem comesprevent · to stop something bad before it happenscontact · a person you are in touch with onlinetrusted adult · a grown-up you trust, such as a parent or teacher
Explanation

A plan is made before trouble comes. Use four boxes and write two ways in each. Box one, protecting my devices: for example, ‘a grown-up keeps the protection updated’ and ‘I lock the screen when I walk away’. Box two, protecting my personal information: ‘I share no address’ and ‘I keep my passwords secret’. Box three, staying safe on chat and sharing sites: ‘I accept only people I know in real life’ and ‘I tell a grown-up if someone makes me uncomfortable’. Box four, handling a threat. If something goes wrong, follow five steps. Stay calm but act quickly. Tell your contacts, so they do not open the suspicious thing. A grown-up scans the device and updates its security. Change your passwords, even if only one account seems to have a problem. Report it to a trusted adult, who decides whether to tell the service provider or the authorities. You are never in trouble for telling. Then share your plan on paper in a short letter to a family member, and finish two sentences: ‘I will always…’ and ‘I will never…’.

Five steps for a threat: Habiba gets a strange message and clicks by mistake. She stays calm, tells her cousins not to open it, asks her father to scan, changes her passwords with him, and reports it to him.

A letter on paper: ‘Dear Grandma, I made a safety plan. Please do not click on prize messages, and ask me if you are not sure. With love, Malak.’ A short letter shares what Malak learned, so her grandmother is safer too.
I will always…I will never…
ask before opening a strange linkshare my password

Two sentences to finish. Seif writes: ‘I will always ask a grown-up before opening a strange link.’ and ‘I will never share my password.’ Each sentence is a promise he can keep.
Class activity
