Companies, laws and telling an adult

ICT P6 Term 1, Theme 2: pp. 54–57
GoalSay who must protect data, what the law says in one sentence and what to do after a theft.
New words
customer · a person who buys or uses the services of a companylaw · a rule made by a country that everyone must followreport · to tell the right people that something has happenedauthorities · the people or offices with the power to deal with a problem
Explanation

Who must protect data? Everyone, but companies have the biggest duty, because they keep the information of thousands of customers. A company must protect its websites and its customers’ information, like a school guard who protects the school and the pupils’ files. Egypt has a law that protects people’s personal data. In one sentence: companies must follow strict security rules, report a theft at once and tell their customers. People should report data theft too. If something happens to you, or to a friend, follow these steps. Stay calm. Do not answer or click on strange messages. Tell a parent or a trusted adult. They can inform the right authorities. Tell the family and friends you contact online, so they are careful too. You are not in trouble, because telling is the brave and clever thing to do.

Compare: a school keeps pupils safe with a gate, a guard and locked rooms. A company keeps customer data safe with passwords, locks, back-ups and rules. Both protect people.
shopreporttell customers
A shop’s customer list is stolen. The shop owner reports it at once and writes to all customers: ‘Be careful with strange messages.’ This follows the law. A shop that stays quiet breaks the rules.
strange messageno replytell mum
Habiba sees a message saying ‘You won a prize, send your details.’ She does not answer. She shows it to her mother, who tells the right office. Habiba did the right thing.
Class activity

Role play. Act a short play in three parts: (1) a pupil sees a strange message; (2) the pupil stays calm and does not click; (3) the pupil tells a trusted adult who calls the right office. Take turns playing the pupil. Use no real names or numbers. After, write one sentence: how did the pupil feel at the end?
