Technology that helps people of determination
ICT means Information and Communication Technology: computers, phones, programs and the internet that help us keep information and speak to other people. People of determination are people who meet a challenge, for example in seeing, hearing, speaking or moving. They have talents and dreams like everyone, and the right tool can open a door for them. A tool that makes a job possible or easier is called assistive technology. Here are three examples. A program can change the lines of a graph into musical notes, so a person who cannot see the graph can hear it go up and down. Another program can turn a text file into a form that a screen reader can read aloud. Some libraries in Egypt have scanners that turn printed pages into sound. People also help: volunteer mentors give advice about writing a CV and about job interviews. There are more than one billion people of determination in the world, so these ideas matter. Remember: humans program computers so that computers can help other humans.
| Need | Tool idea | How it helps |
|---|---|---|
| see a graph | lines become musical notes | the listener hears it go up or down |
| read a printed page | scanner that turns print into sound | the page is read aloud |
| find a job | volunteer mentors | advice on CVs and interviews |
Make a three-box card. In the first box draw a printed page. In the second box draw an arrow and write what the scanner does. In the third box draw a speaker. Show your card to a family member and explain who it helps.
