No internet today: what now?
ICT P5 Term 1, Theme 1: pp. 26–29
GoalPlan what to do when there is no internet and homework is due, and judge how confident I am at asking for help.
New words
scenario · an imagined situation we use to practiseplan B · another way to do the job when the first way failspatient · able to wait calmlyconfident · sure that you can do something
Explanation
Imagine this scenario. Homework about the Nile is due tomorrow, and the internet at home has stopped. Stay calm. First, ask a grown-up to try the usual fixes. If the internet does not come back, use plan B. Look in books, a school library book, or your notes from class. Ask a family member what they know. Write what you can now, and leave space for facts you will add when the internet works. If you need more time, tell your teacher politely before the deadline. Being patient and having a plan B are part of solving problems. Finally, think about how confident you feel at asking for help. Practise a clear sentence: ‘I tried these steps. Could you help me with the next one?’
If this happens…
Plan B
no internet and homework is due
use books, class notes, ask a family member
the computer will not start
write by hand on paper and type it later
you need more time
tell the teacher politely before the deadline
Worked examples
Mina’s internet stops while he writes about the Red Sea. He finds a book about the sea in his school bag, copies no sentences, and writes in his own words from what he reads.
Jana says to her aunt, ‘I restarted the tablet and checked that Wi-Fi is on. The page still does not open. Could you help me with the next step?’ That is a clear way to ask.
Karim rates how confident he feels, from 1 to 5, at asking for help. At first it is 2. After he practises the sentence with his teacher, it is 4.
Class activity
Scenario cards. Write three scenarios on cards: no internet before a deadline; a tablet that freezes; a computer that is slow after a download. For each, write plan B. Then rate yourself from 1 to 5: ‘How sure am I about asking for help?’ and write one sentence that would help you to ask. Share it with your partner.
Practice
1
The internet stops and homework is due tomorrow. Name two things you can use instead.
For example: books, class notes, a family member’s knowledge.
2
What is plan B?
Another way to do the job when the first way fails.
3
When should you tell your teacher you need more time?
Politely, before the deadline.
4
Write one clear sentence for asking for help after you tried steps.
For example: ‘I tried these steps. Could you help me with the next one?’
