Problem and first fix
Most problems have a simple first fix. If a program is slow, restart the device, look for an update, and close or remove programs nobody uses, which take up room. If the browser is slow, check the signal: is the Wi-Fi weak because you are far from the router? If there is no internet, a grown-up checks whether the router is on and its lights are normal, restarts it, and if it still does not work, calls the customer service of the internet company. If downloads are slow, restart and check the speed of the connection. A fix that failed once may work for another problem, so keep a list. Restarting a router or a computer is done together with a grown-up.
| Problem | Good first fix |
|---|---|
| a program is slow | restart, check for updates, remove unused programs |
| the browser is slow | check the Wi-Fi signal |
| no internet | check the router is on, restart it, ask customer service |
| slow downloads | restart and check the speed |
Problem doctor. Write five problem cards on paper (for example ‘the computer is slow’, ‘pages open slowly’). Swap with a partner. Say the first fix for each card and why. Then make one new card of a problem that you have really met and its first fix. Remember: only a grown-up opens, plugs or restarts devices.
