Plan before you search
ICT P5 Term 1, Theme 1: pp. 34–37
GoalPlan a search by choosing a topic, subtopics and a team job list.
New words
topic · the main thing you want to learn aboutsubtopic · a smaller part of a topicknowledge share · a talk where a team says what it knows and what it does not knowsearch · looking for information on purpose
Explanation
Searching is building knowledge, and a builder plans before laying a brick. First choose a topic, for example ‘camels’. A topic is big, so break it into subtopics: where camels live, what they eat, how they help people. Next, hold a knowledge share. In a team, each person says what we already know and what we do not know yet. Then share the jobs: Youssef looks for food, Salma for homes, Omar for how camels help. For more fun, let two people search the same subtopic and compare what they found. Planning saves time because nobody does the same job twice.
Worked examples
Mariam’s team has the topic ‘kites’. They write subtopics on cards: how kites fly, kites in Egypt, how to make a kite, kite safety. Now each pupil has a card.
In the knowledge share, Karim says, ‘We know kites need wind. We do not know why a tail helps.’ The team writes the second sentence as a question to find out.
Two pupils search the same subtopic. Hana finds that camels store fat in the hump. Farida finds the same fact in a different book. Two sources agree, so they trust it more.
Class activity
Plan a search. Choose a topic you like (the Nile, football, bread). On paper draw a tree with the topic at the top and four subtopics under it. Write ‘We know’ and ‘We want to know’ and add two lines under each. Give each subtopic to a different team member. No computer needed.
Practice
1
What is a subtopic?
A smaller part of a topic.
2
What do we do in a knowledge share?
Say what we already know and what we do not know yet.
3
Why is planning before a search useful?
It saves time because nobody does the same job twice.
4
Look at the picture. Which one shows the topic and which show subtopics? Say the letters.
A is the topic (camels). B and C are subtopics (food and the desert home).
