Scanner, camera, QR code, flash memory

ICT P5 Term 1, Theme 1: pp. 30–33
GoalTell how a scanner, a camera, a QR code and flash memory bring information into a computer and keep it.
New words
scanner · a machine that turns a paper page into a filedigital camera · a camera that saves pictures as filesQR code · a square pattern that holds a link or a short textfile · one piece of saved information, such as a picture or a document
Explanation

Information has to get into a computer before we can keep it. A scanner is like a photocopier that makes a file instead of a paper copy: you put in a page of your drawing and you get a picture file. A digital camera takes photos that are saved as files too. A QR code is a square pattern that holds a link or a short text. Pointing a phone camera at it can open that link. That is useful, but the link may open a website, so never scan a code alone: do it with a teacher or a family member. Flash memory is the small stick that stores files and lets you carry them from one computer to another. In this lesson we only draw QR codes as a labelled box, because a real code holds a real link.

Worked examples
paperscannerfile
Salma has a paper certificate from her swimming class. Her mother scans it and now it is a file on the computer. The paper stays safe in a drawer.
teacher opens itlinkclass page
Omar’s teacher shows a QR code on the wall, drawn as a plain square with the words ‘QR code’. She explains that it holds a link to a class page. She will open it with the class, because pupils do not scan codes alone.

Mina copies his project onto flash memory at school, takes it home and opens it on the family computer. The same file is on both.
Class activity

Tool detective. Write a list of six jobs, such as ‘turn my paper drawing into a file’, ‘carry my project to a friend’s house’, ‘show a link in a poster’. Next to each, write the tool: scanner, camera, QR code or flash memory. Add one safety note that a QR code needs.

Practice
1
What does a scanner do?
2
What does a QR code hold?
3
Why should you never scan a QR code alone?
4
Look at the picture. Which tool lets you carry a file to another computer? Say the letter.
