Explanation

When a torch does not light, you do not throw it away. You think. Is the battery empty? Is the bulb broken? Is the switch off? Fixing computer problems is the same, and there are five steps. One: identify the problem. Is it hardware, a part you can touch, or software, the programs inside, or just a small mistake of ours? Two: think of different solutions. Three: try them one by one, not all together, so you know which one worked. Four: review. Which solution worked, and what did you learn? Five: if nothing works, ask a teacher or a family member for help. Asking for help is a clever step, not a weak one.

Worked examples

The torch does not light. Youssef checks: the switch is on, the bulb looks fine, but the battery is empty. He puts in a new battery and it works. The problem was a part you can touch.

Mariam’s laptop says a program is not answering. The laptop and the screen are fine, so it is a software problem. She closes the program and opens it again with her teacher’s help.

Farida tries three ideas to fix a slow tablet, one at a time, and writes down each. Only the second one helps. Now she knows what to try first next time.
Class activity

Fix it on paper. A pretend lamp will not turn on. Draw the five steps as boxes. Under each box, write what you would do for the lamp (for example: look at the plug; think of three reasons; try one reason at a time; write which one worked; ask a grown-up if it still does not work). Never touch real sockets or wires.
