The 10-20-30 rule
ICT P5 Term 2, Theme 4: pp. 70–73
GoalApply the 10-20-30 rule to plan the number of slides, the time and the size of letters.
New words
rule · a clear guide that tells you what to dofont size · how big the letters are, measured in pointsoverwhelm · to give someone so much that they cannot take it all indesign option · a ready-made look for slides instead of plain black and white
Explanation
A presentation should not overwhelm the audience with too much information or take too long. The 10-20-30 rule is a guide. Ten: no more than ten slides. Twenty: no longer than twenty minutes. Thirty: letters no smaller than size thirty, so that people at the back can read them. This is a limit, not a target, so a short school talk may be much shorter. When the slides are taking shape, look at the design options in the presentation program, which offer different looks instead of plain black and white. Choose a design that is clear. Remember that a simple, clear slide is better than a crowded one. Less is more.
Number
What it limits
Example
10
slides
at most 10 slides
20
minutes
no more than 20 minutes
30
size of letters
letters size 30 or bigger
Worked examples
Karim wants 14 slides for a 5-minute talk. That is more than ten, and about 20 seconds per slide. He cuts to 6 slides. With 6 slides in 5 minutes, he has nearly a minute for each.
A full 20-minute talk with 10 slides gives 2 minutes per slide (20 ÷ 10 = 2). The speaker talks about each slide for about two minutes, so each slide must be clear and not crowded.
Hana’s letters are size 12 and the class cannot read them from the back. She makes them size 30. Fewer words fit, so she cuts her text to the key ideas.
Class activity
Apply the rule. Work with a partner. 1. A talk is planned for 20 minutes with 8 slides. Does it follow the 10-20-30 rule? 2. Another talk has 12 slides. How many must be cut? 3. A talk with 5 slides lasts 15 minutes. How many minutes per slide? 4. Which letter size is too small: 40, 30 or 18? Write the answers. Then give advice to the presenter of a hard-to-read slide: what three things would you change?
Practice
1
What does the 10 in the 10-20-30 rule stand for?
At most ten slides.
2
A talk of 20 minutes has 10 slides. How many minutes per slide?
2 minutes (20 ÷ 10 = 2).
3
Why must letters be no smaller than size 30?
So that people at the back can read them.
4
A presenter has 13 slides. How many must be taken away to follow the rule?
