Reading a web address
ICT P5 Term 1, Theme 2: pp. 58–61
GoalRead a web address in three parts and spot a look-alike address.
New words
web address (URL) · the text that tells where a web page isprotocol · the first part: how the page is sent, http or httpsresource name · the middle part: who owns the sitefile path · the last part: where the page is inside the site
Explanation
A web address is like a home address. A house address has a country, a street and a flat number. A web address has three parts. The protocol comes first: https is the safer kind. The resource name comes next, and tells who owns the site; it often ends with .com, .org, .gov or .edu. The file path comes last and says which page inside the site. Look-alike sites change a letter or add an extra word, like ‘green-bokos’ instead of ‘green-books’. So read slowly and check the spelling and grammar. Endings like .edu are signs, not proof. All addresses here are invented. Browse only with a grown-up.

who owns the site
which page inside the site
Worked examples
The invented address https://www.nile-farms.org/animals/camel.html has https (protocol), nile-farms.org (resource name) and /animals/camel.html (file path). So we are on the camel page of a site called Nile Farms.
Habiba wants the site green-books.org, but a message sends her to green-bokos.org. Two letters are swapped. This is a look-alike. She does not enter anything and tells her teacher.
Omar checks the page itself. The words are full of spelling mistakes and the grammar is odd. That is another warning sign for a fake site.
Class activity
Address detective. Write on cards three invented addresses of your own and three look-alike versions with a changed letter or an extra word. Mix them. A partner sorts the real from the look-alikes and says what changed. Then cut one address into its three parts and name each part.
Practice
1
Name the three parts of a web address.
Protocol, resource name, file path.
2
In https://www.nile-farms.org/animals/camel.html, what is the file path?
/animals/camel.html
3
What is a look-alike address?
An address that changes a letter or adds a word to copy a real one.
