Meetings across places and time zones
ICT P5 Term 1, Theme 1: pp. 8–13
GoalExplain how video meetings help people in different places and why time differences matter.
New words
video meeting · a meeting where people far apart see and hear each other on screenstime difference · the number of hours between the clocks of two placesnotes · a short written record of what was said and decidedrecorded lesson · a lesson saved so you can watch it again
Explanation
Sometimes people cannot meet face to face because they live in different countries. A video meeting solves this. People see and hear each other on screens, show a picture or a table to everybody, and send documents. There is one problem: time. When it is noon in Cairo it can be early morning in a city far to the west and late afternoon in a city far to the east. We call this the time difference. A good meeting time is a time when everybody is awake and not at dinner or asleep. After the meeting, someone writes short notes: what we said and what we decided. Then everyone has the same information. In Egypt the Ministry also keeps recorded lessons, so a pupil who missed a lesson, or did not understand it, can watch it again.

Worked examples
Youssef’s class in Cairo has a video meeting with a class in City A. They choose 10 in the morning in Cairo. It is 12 noon in City A, so both classes are awake and in school.
Farida suggests 4 in the afternoon in Cairo for a meeting with City B. In City B it is 10 in the morning. Both sides are awake, so it works. Midnight in Cairo would be 2 in the morning in City A, when children are asleep.
Nour was ill and missed a lesson. Her teacher tells her to watch the recorded lesson. She pauses it, writes notes, and watches the hard part again.
Class activity
Find the meeting time. Draw three clocks on paper. Cairo is the first clock. City A is 2 hours ahead and City B is 6 hours behind. Write a Cairo time that suits all three places (daytime for everyone), then write the time on the other two clocks. Ask a partner to check. Then write three lines of notes for an imaginary meeting about a school trip.
Practice
1
It is 3 in the afternoon in Cairo. What time is it in City A (2 hours ahead)?
5 in the afternoon.
2
It is 3 in the afternoon in Cairo. What time is it in City B (6 hours behind)?
9 in the morning.
3
Why do we write notes after a meeting?
So everyone has the same information about what was said and decided.
4
How does a recorded lesson give a pupil a second chance?
The pupil can watch it again, pause it and take notes.
