Yesenin’s poems
Textbook: Part 2, pp. 178–189
ЦельExplain Yesenin’s poems “Xurosonda bir darboza bor...”, “Dog‘lar ketmish majruh ko‘ngildan...”, “Singlimga xat” and “Ona ibodati”.
In the five-stanza poem “Xurosonda bir darboza bor...” the lyric hero falls in love with a fairy-faced beauty behind a flower-covered gate that he cannot open; in the end love of the homeland turns him back toward Russia, but he promises to sing of the fairy all his life in his own land. The repetition of a line in each stanza increases the musicality. “Dog‘lar ketmish majruh ko‘ngildan...” has seven stanzas and tells of a Russian young man in a tea-house who loves a beauty called the flower of Tehran, and shows the difference between Iran and Russia in the treatment of women (the veil): love, however, stands above such barriers. In “Singlimga xat” the lyric hero recalls the plum orchard, the way it was cut down for crops, the white birches of May days, Pushkin and Lermontov; at the end he hopes that when his sister’s children play in the garden they will remember the mad dreamers. In “Ona ibodati” a mother whose only son is in battle prays and in her mind sees him lifeless, clutching the enemy flag; the textbook interprets this as a symbol of courage and victory (it recalls the fate of Najmiddin Kubro) and says that for the mother the homeland and the son have merged.
Примеры
Example: “Singlimga xat” is in letter form: it opens not with a greeting but with a mention of a poem about Delvig, and the greeting comes next; this shows the sincere understanding between brother and sister.
Example: in “Ona ibodati” the short lines and the seven-syllable meter (4+3) strengthen the excitement and the force of events; Erkin Vohidov kept this meter in translation.
Работа в классе
Choose one of the four poems and analyze its repetition, letter form or symbol, writing a five-sentence commentary.
Упражнения
1
Why does the lyric hero of “Xurosonda bir darboza bor...” return toward Russia?
His love for the native land turns him back; thus love and homeland are set against each other.
2
How is the difference in treating women between Iran and Russia shown in “Dog‘lar ketmish...”?
In Iran the beauty is under a veil, in Russia girls are free; but love is no obstacle to such differences.
3
What does the garden mean in “Singlimga xat”?
An image of childhood, memory and lost beauty; at the end it is linked with the future generation.
4
What does the son’s clutching of the enemy flag mean in “Ona ibodati”?
That he was not defeated in battle but lived and passed on courageously and victoriously; the textbook calls this a symbol of patriotism.
