The textbook has the text “Yagonadir Vataning sening!” (Your homeland is one and only!) by Xurshid Davron; it reflects on what the homeland is and how love for it is born. We do not retell it; we read our own text. The main idea of a text is the chief thought the author wants to give us. To find it we ask: “What is the author talking about and what does he or she want to teach?” The word “Vatan” means “the place of birth”, and “istiqlol” means independence.

“When the swallows return”. Every spring swallows come back to the porch of our yard. They spend the winter in warm lands, but when spring arrives they fly back to their old nests. Grandmother says: “Even a bird does not forget its land.” I think of how I miss my school, the old willow in our neighbourhood and my faraway relatives. Then I understand that the homeland is not just a big word but the dearest places before my eyes. When I grow up I will gain knowledge and help make my country prosperous.
Main idea: love for the homeland begins with loving the near and dear places. Uzbekistan’s independence was declared on 31 August 1991; 1 September is Independence Day.
