Lines, shapes and colours

ICT P4 Term 2, Theme 4: pp. 70–73
GoalCombine shapes, lines and colours to build a picture, and fix it with zoom and select.
New words
shape · a simple form such as a square, triangle or circleline · a long thin mark, straight or curvedcolour · red, blue, green and so oncombine · to put things together to make one thing
Explanation

Any picture can be built from simple shapes. A house is a rectangle with a triangle on top. A car is two rectangles and two ovals for the wheels. Choose a shape tool, drag to make the shape, and use lines to add details such as windows. Then fill each part with a colour. Zoom in to see tiny gaps, because colour spills out of a shape that is not completely closed. Use select to move a part. Choose colours that go together and do not use too many. On paper you can do the same with a ruler and a pencil.

PictureShapes
Housea rectangle (walls) + a triangle (roof) + a small rectangle (door)
Cartwo rectangles (body and window) + two ovals (wheels)
Treea rectangle (trunk) + an oval (leaves)

Farida builds a car: a rectangle for the body, a small rectangle for the window and two ovals for the wheels. In total 1 + 1 + 2 = 4 shapes.
colour spills✗zoom to find the gapgap closed, fill works✓
Hana fills the roof of her house and the colour spills over the whole page, because there is a tiny gap in the roof line. She zooms in, closes the gap with a line, and fills again, and now it works.

Omar draws a tree with only three colours: brown for the trunk, green for the leaves and blue for the sky.
Class activity

A picture from shapes. Using only squares, rectangles, triangles, circles and lines, draw a felucca, a house or a bus on squared paper. Count how many shapes of each kind you used and write the numbers. Colour with at most three colours.

Practice
1
A tree has one rectangle for the trunk and three ovals for the leaves. How many shapes does it have?
2
Which two shapes make a simple house?
3
Why might the fill colour spill over the whole picture?
4
Which tool helps you see a tiny gap? Say the letter.
