Review: digital citizenship and communication
ICT P4 Term 2, Themes 3–4
GoalReview digital citizenship, the digital footprint, live and later communication, learning sources and research planning with new tasks.
New words
digital citizen · a person who uses technology safely, kindly and responsiblydigital footprint · the trail we leave onlinesynchronous · live, at the same timeasynchronous · a message we answer later
Explanation
In Theme 3 you learned that a digital citizen uses technology safely, kindly and responsibly. Everything you post leaves a digital footprint, like footprints on a sandy path, so think before you post, ask permission and credit your sources. Rights come with responsibilities: you have a right to be safe and a responsibility to be kind to others. Communication can be live (synchronous) or for later (asynchronous), and we choose with questions: Is it urgent? Do I know the person well? Does the answer need thought? Online learning environments, virtual labs and interactive maps are sources for learning. Before research we plan: a topic, what I know, what I want to learn and the kinds of sources; then we take notes with their sources, make an outline and write a report. Use the review table to check yourself.
Idea
Short reminder
Digital citizen
safe, kind and responsible
Digital footprint
what I leave online stays
Live (synchronous)
urgent, a close person, a quick answer
Later (asynchronous)
important but not urgent, or needs thought
Learning sources
digital library, virtual lab, interactive map
Research plan
topic, what I know, what I want to learn, sources
Worked examples
Salma wants to tell her cousin about tomorrow’s test and to thank a librarian she hardly knows. The first is quick and between relatives, so live suits it. The second is a carefully written thank-you, so later suits it.
A good footprint
Avoid
kind comments
sharing a password
crediting the owner of a picture
unkind jokes
asking before posting someone’s picture
posting an address or phone number
Marwan’s class makes a poster about a good digital footprint and what to avoid.
Job
Best source
comparing the rain in two countries
an interactive map
a science experiment, safely on screen
a virtual lab
a short talk about the Nile
a book in the school library
Which source suits each job?
Class activity
Review quiz show. In groups of three, write six question cards: two about being a digital citizen, two about choosing live or later, and two about planning research. Swap cards with another group and answer them. Each correct answer scores a point.
Practice
1
Name two ways to protect your digital footprint.
Any two of: ask permission before posting, share no private information, be kind, credit sources.
2
Which is live: “the bus is leaving now” or “a carefully written thank-you to a teacher”?
“The bus is leaving now”, because it is urgent.
3
Put the research steps in order: A write the report, B choose a topic, C take notes with sources, D write an outline.
B, C, D, A.
4
Give one question you ask to judge a source.
For example: Who made it? Is there evidence? How recent is it? Facts or opinions? Is it fair?
