GoalSay what online bullying is and what to do if it happens.
New words
bullying · being unkind to someone again and againonline · done using the internettrusted adult · a grown-up you feel safe with, who wants to help youblock · to stop a person from sending you messages, with a grown-up’s help
Explanation
Bullying is unkind behaviour towards someone, again and again. Online bullying uses messages, posts or texts. A mean message may go to one person only, or it may be shared with many. Phones and tablets are often near us, so it can feel as if there is no place to escape. If this happens, remember: it is not your fault, and you are not in trouble. Do not answer unkindly. Do not forward the message. Keep it, so that a grown-up can see it. Tell a trusted adult, such as a family member or a teacher. With a grown-up, you can also block the person who sends the messages. And never contact people you do not know.
Something unkind arrives→I do not answer unkindly→I keep the message→I tell a trusted adult→The grown-up helps me block and report
Worked examples
Nour draws well. In a class group, some children keep writing mean jokes about her drawings, day after day. That is bullying. Nour keeps the messages and shows her mother, and her mother talks to the teacher. (This is an invented story.)
Jana is upset about unkind messages. Her friend Mariam listens and says: “I am sorry this happened. It is not your fault. Let us tell our teacher together.”
When a mean message arrives, three moves are wrong and one is right. Answering unkindly makes it worse, and forwarding it spreads it. Telling a trusted adult is the move that helps.
Class activity
Kind words cards. On three cards, write what you could say to a friend who is upset by unkind messages. Start with: “I am sorry…”, “It is not your fault…”, “Let us tell…”. In pairs, one child is the upset friend and one is the helper. Practise saying the cards kindly. Use an imaginary story, not real children.
