ICT P4 Term 1, Theme 2: pp. 62–65
GoalSay what the Egyptian Knowledge Bank is and sort places to find information.
New words
library · a place that keeps books and information for people to usefree · you do not pay to use itchecked · looked at carefully to see that it is correctresearch · finding out facts about a topic
Explanation
The Egyptian Knowledge Bank is a big online library for people in Egypt. It is free to use. It has articles, videos and books about many subjects. The information is checked before it is put there, so it is a good place to begin your research for school. You use it with a teacher or a family member, as with every online place. Even a trusted library helps only if you search with good key words, and you still write down where you found each fact. Remember how to decide: look at the date, the author and the ending, and use more than one source for important facts.
Worked examples
Youssef’s class will research desert animals. The teacher suggests three places to start: the free online library, a school science book and a talk with a vet.
Farida finds a fact about camels in the online library and again in her school book. Two reliable sources agree, so she writes down the fact and the names of both sources.
Nour plans a talk about saving water. She lists the online library, a school book and a video made by someone she does not know. She puts a question mark next to the video: check first.
Class activity
Source plan. Choose a topic for a pretend project, for example animals of the desert. On paper, draw a table with two columns: Good places to start and Check first. Write at least three places in each column and say why. Share with a partner and add one idea you liked from your partner.
