Phonics: ai and a-e

Connect P2 Term 2: Unit 10
GoalHear and read the sound ay in ai and a-e words.
New words
train · it runs on a railwayrain · water from the cloudssnail · a small animal with a shellcake · a sweet food for a partysnake · a long animal with no legs
Explanation

Two spellings can say the same sound: ay, like the name of the letter a. The letters ai say ay in train and rain. In cake and snake, the a and the e work together: a, then one letter, then e at the end. The e is silent. Say: ai, ai, train. a-e, a-e, cake.

Worked examples
Listen and say. Find a-e.

On a rainy day Mina sees a snail in the garden. She makes a cake with her mum. They eat the cake at the table.

Read and listen to the text. Find ai and a-e.
