Explanation

A story has a beginning, a middle and an end. This story is about a girl and a tap. Listen to it in three parts. Water is very important. We drink it, we wash with it, and plants need it to grow. In many villages, people take care of every drop. Listen three times, then tell the story in your own words.

Worked examples

Habiba lives in a small village near the Nile. It is a hot summer. The sun is bright and the ground is dry. Her grandmother has a little garden with tomatoes and mint. The plants need water every day.

Listen to part 1.

One night Habiba hears a sound in the kitchen. Drip, drip, drip. The tap is not closed! Water is falling into the sink. In the morning she tells her grandmother. Grandma says, Water is precious, Habiba. We must not waste it.

Listen to part 2.

Habiba has an idea. She puts a bucket under the tap. By the afternoon the bucket is half full. She waters the tomatoes with it. Then she tells her friends. Soon every house in the village has a bucket and a closed tap. The garden is green again. Habiba smiles and says, Every drop counts!

Listen to part 3.
Now you. Tell the story to a grown-up with the four pictures.
Class activity

Act the story. One person is Habiba and one is Grandma. Use a real bucket and a plastic bottle for the tap. Habiba hears drip, drip, drip, finds the problem and has the idea. Then talk: how can we save water at home? Say two ideas.
