Rocks and the environment
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Look around your home or street with an adult. Find three places where rock or stone has been used. Say what each one is used for.
For example: a stone step, a granite kitchen top, a tiled floor, a wall or a bridge.
2
Choose a rock. Tell a grown-up two ways to describe it, for example whether it is rough or smooth, dark or light.
Any sensible describing words: smooth, rough, hard, grey, shiny, with little bits.
3
Why is chalk not used to build a house? Tell a grown-up.
Chalk is too soft and crumbles. Builders need a very strong rock, such as granite.
4
Draw a picture of an animal that lost its home when a quarry was dug. Where could it go?
Any reasonable idea, such as moving to a nearby forest or field where there is food, water and shelter.
