People, light and electricity

Workbook 2: Units 4–6, pp. 44–80
GoalRemember how animals and people grow and stay healthy, how light and the Sun behave, and how circuits work safely.
New words
young · a baby animallight source · something that makes its own lightcircuit · a loop that electricity can flow roundcell · a small store of electricity
Explanation

We can sort animals by their body parts, such as wings, fur, feathers or scales. Young animals grow up and often look like their parents. We stay healthy with a mix of foods, water, exercise, sleep and clean hands. Brushing our teeth twice a day keeps them strong. A light source makes its own light, like the Sun or a torch. The Sun seems to move across the sky because the Earth turns. A lamp, a buzzer or a motor works only in a complete circuit. Small cells are safe to use, but mains electricity is for grown-ups.

Worked examples
kangaroo
A baby kangaroo, called a joey, grows in its mother’s pouch. When it is bigger it hops out. It has long back legs, just like her.
light sourcetentfamily
At a campfire, an adult looks after the fire. The fire is a light source. The children’s faces look bright, but only because the firelight falls on them.
−+−+Mnew cells: the motor turns
Botir’s toy fan has stopped. Its cells have run out, so nothing pushes the electricity round. His mum helps him put in new cells, and the motor turns again.
Class activity

Year quiz game (two or more players): each player makes six question cards, one for each unit: habitats, forces, materials, animals and health, light, electricity. Write the answer on the back. Mix the cards, take turns to pick one and answer it. You win a card for each right answer. Who knows the most?
