GoalSay that animals eat plants or other animals, and that plants and animals both need the habitat to stay alive.
New words
food · what a living thing eats to stay alive and growseeds · small parts of a plant that can grow into new plantsprotect · to keep safe
Explanation
Animals cannot make their own food, so they must find it in their habitat. Some animals eat plants. A goat nibbles leaves, a squirrel eats nuts and a caterpillar munches leaves. Some animals eat other animals. An owl catches mice, and a frog catches flies with its long tongue. Plants grow well where there is plenty of water, and animals come there to eat and drink. If the plants are cut down or the water is spoiled, the animals lose their food and their home. They may die, or they may move away.
Worked examples
A goat nibbles grass, leaves and even the bark of bushes.
An owl hunts mice and other small animals at night.
If the stream dries up, the plants die. Then the animals have no food, and they must move away.
