The Sun appears to move!
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Draw the Sun’s path across the sky. Show where it is in the morning, at midday and in the afternoon.
An arc: low on one side (east) in the morning, highest in the middle at midday, low on the other side (west) in the afternoon. Remind the child never to look straight at the Sun.
2
Look at a shadow in the morning and again at midday, with a grown-up. Which shadow is longer?
The morning shadow is longer. At midday the Sun is high and the shadow is short.
3
Tell a grown-up why the Sun only seems to move.
Because the Earth turns, the Sun seems to move across the sky.
4
Write a safety rule about looking at the Sun, and say why.
Never look straight at the Sun, because it can hurt and damage the eyes.
