GoalDescribe how humans grow and change from baby to older person.
New words
baby · a very young childteenager · a young person who is between a child and an adultolder person · an adult who has lived for a long time
Explanation
People grow and change too. A baby is small and cannot walk or talk. Babies drink milk and sleep a lot. A child grows taller and heavier. A child learns to walk, talk, run and read. Children lose their baby teeth and grow bigger teeth. A teenager grows and changes again. Then a person becomes an adult and stops growing taller. Some adults have babies of their own. As people become older, their hair may turn grey. Everyone grows at their own speed, so some children are taller than others of the same age, and that is fine.
Worked examples
Yuki was a baby who could only drink milk. Now she is six and can run, read and brush her teeth.
When Omar was little, his clothes soon became too small because he grew taller. Growing is why we need bigger clothes and shoes.
Grandma has grey hair and lots of stories. She was once a baby, a child and an adult too.
Class activity
My growing story (with an adult): ask a grown-up to show you a baby photo of you, or a baby photo of someone in your family. Make a picture strip with four boxes: baby, toddler, now, and you as an adult. Draw yourself in each. Write one thing you can do now that you could not do as a baby.
Practice
1
Which comes first in a person’s life: child or baby?
Baby.
2

Baby, child, adult, older person.
3
Name two things a child can do that a baby cannot.
For example: walk, talk, run, read, ride a bike, eat solid food.

Lina’s trainers from last year hurt her toes. Why?
Her feet have grown bigger, so the old trainers are now too small.
