Andijan region
Andijan region is the easternmost region of the country: its west is plain and its east hills and foothills that join the mountain ranges. Almost no new land is left to develop, so the cotton harvest is raised mainly by increasing yields. Vegetables, potatoes and melons are grown mostly near cities; fruit growing, viticulture and silk farming matter, and orchards and vineyards are spreading onto the foothills. Livestock includes sheep, goats and dairy-and-meat cattle. In industry, machine building, car manufacturing, power generation, and light and food branches lead, with most plants in the Andijan industrial node. The car plant at Asaka is the country’s biggest car-making centre and assembles Chevrolet-brand passenger cars. The region gets electricity from the regional unified power system, and there is a hydro plant at the Kampirrabad reservoir. Andijan was one of the first places where oil was extracted in the country; oil goes by pipeline to refineries in Fergana region, and there is a large underground gas storage at Khojaobod. The city of Andijan has been a centre of irrigated farming for centuries and has a university and institutes; Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur was born here and described it in the Baburnama.
