Administrative-territorial structure of Uzbekistan
Textbook: pp. 8–10
GoalKnow the administrative-territorial structure of Uzbekistan (three levels) and the categories of cities.
Uzbekistan covers about 448.9 thousand sq. km, more than Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom or Italy. Its capital is the city of Tashkent. The administrative-territorial structure has three levels: on the first stand the Republic of Karakalpakstan, 12 regions and the city of Tashkent; on the second, districts and cities under regional rule; on the third, towns, rural citizens’ assemblies and auls. The regions are Andijan, Bukhara, Jizzakh, Navoi, Namangan, Samarkand, Syrdarya, Surkhandarya, Tashkent, Fergana, Kashkadarya and Khorezm. They differ greatly in area and population. By subordination, cities fall into three categories: under the republic (only Tashkent), under a region or Karakalpakstan, and under a district. Borders of regions and districts and the status of a city or town are set by law, so the number and names of districts may change over time.
Worked examples
The centre of Kashkadarya region is the city of Karshi and that of Namangan region is the city of Namangan; the administrative centre of Tashkent region is the city of Nurafshon.
The capital of the Republic of Karakalpakstan is Nukus; its border can be changed only with its own consent.
Class activity
“Assembling the map”: the class draws region borders and centres on a blank map; each student names one region and shows its centre.
