What does the economic and social geography of Uzbekistan study?
Physical geography studies nature, while economic and social geography studies how people live, how the economy works and how production differs from place to place. It looks at how human activity is organized across territory, both within one country and across the whole world. In Grade 8 we study the economy and population of Uzbekistan together with its natural conditions. If a factory, hospital or school is built in a random place, people have to travel far and money and time are wasted. Labour productivity depends on how well workers are supplied with machines, energy and raw materials, and on their living and rest conditions. When raw materials, fuel and workers are close together, production is efficient, but such a lucky combination is rare. That is why the location of enterprises must be planned in advance. Figures and even place names change, so one must follow new data.
“Where should the factory go?”: groups of students choose a place for an imaginary flour mill and justify the choice by raw material, workers and roads.
