Explanation

The function y = k/x (k ≠ 0) is defined for every x except 0, and its values are also nonzero. Its graph is called a hyperbola and consists of two branches. If k > 0, the branches lie in quadrants I and III, and the function decreases on each of the intervals x < 0 and x > 0. If k < 0, the branches lie in quadrants II and IV and the function increases on each of these intervals. The function is odd: replacing x by -x changes the sign of y, so the graph is symmetric about the origin. Since xy = k at every point, x and y are inversely proportional quantities.

Worked examples
For y = 6/x: x = 1, 2, 3, 6 give y = 6, 3, 2, 1; x = -1, -2, -3, -6 give y = -6, -3, -2, -1. Joining the points gives branches in quadrants I and III.
y = -4/x: x = 1, 2, 4 give y = -4, -2, -1; x = -2, -4 give y = 2, 1. The branches are in quadrants II and IV. The graph of y = 4/x - 2 is the graph of y = 4/x shifted 2 units down.
Class activity

“Hyperbola from points”: each pupil plots one point of y = 12/x on a coordinate plane; together the points form the two branches.

Practice
1
Find the value of y = 12/x at x = 4.
2
In which quadrants does the graph of y = -5/x lie?
3
The graph of y = k/x passes through (3, -2). Find k.
4
Why does the graph of y = k/x never meet the coordinate axes?
