Practical: Studying animal classification
Textbook, pp. 45–46
GoalArrange the main ranks of animal classification in order and work out an animal’s place in classification.
In animal classification the taxonomic units from largest to smallest are: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. In a large unit animals share few features; in a small unit they share many. Vertebrates (phylum Chordata) are divided into five classes: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. To find an animal’s place we decide which phylum it belongs to, then class, order and so on. For example the Amu Darya trout: animal kingdom, phylum chordates, class ray-finned fish, order salmon-like fish, family salmon family, genus salmon (losos), species Amu Darya trout. Classification helps us understand the diversity of animals.
Worked examples
Brown bear: animal kingdom → chordates → mammals → carnivores → bears (family) → bear genus → brown bear. The mink, otter and badger belong to the mammal class, carnivore order, mustelid family: they are alike but are different species.
Putting in order: family, species, phylum, genus, kingdom, class, order → kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.
Class activity
Practical work: work with pictures of mammals (cat, wolf, horse, bat, dolphin). For each, write phylum and class and then order in a table, and list similarities and differences (body covering, habitat, feeding). Safety: use only pictures and cards; if you touch a pet, wash hands with soap; do not approach wild animals.
Practice
1
List the ranks of animal classification from the largest to the smallest.
