Decimals
Textbook: Part 3, lesson 101, pp. 95–97
GoalThe idea of a decimal: a new way to write fractions; separating whole and fraction parts with a decimal comma (point); the tenths place.
New words
decimal · o‘nli kasrdecimal comma (point) · vergulplace · xonaone tenth · o‘ndan bir
Explanation
There is one more way to write fractional numbers: a decimal. The number is written in one line and the whole part is separated from the fraction part by a comma in Uzbek (a point in English). 1/10 = 0.1. The first place after the point is the tenths place: its digit shows how many tenths there are. For example 254.3 is 2 hundreds, 5 tens, 4 ones and 3 tenths. Uzbek writes a decimal comma (254,3); English writes a decimal point (254.3).
Worked examples
3/10 = 0.3 and 4 9/10 = 4.9. The other way: 0.7 = 7/10.
46.7 is forty-six and seven tenths. A thermometer showing 36.6 shows 36 degrees and 6 tenths.
Class activity
“Thermometer”: the teacher draws a large thermometer with 0.1-degree marks. Children read different levels as decimals: 36.4, 37.1, 38.0.
