GoalReview reading, writing, classes, place value and comparing of multi-digit numbers.
New words
class (group of three places) · sinfplace (digit position) · xonathousand · minglikmillion · million
Explanation
A multi-digit number is split from the right into classes of three places: the units class, the thousands class and the millions class. Each class has ones, tens and hundreds. To compare numbers, first compare how many digits they have; if that is equal, look at the first different digit from the left.
Worked examples
The number 52 408 307 is 52 million 408 thousand 307. The millions class holds 52, the thousands class 408, the units class 307.
Compare 2 604 150 and 2 640 150: they have the same number of digits and the first difference from the left is in the ten-thousands place (0 and 4). So 2 604 150 < 2 640 150.
Class activity
“Digit cards”: each group gets six cards with digits from 0 to 9. Children build the largest and the smallest six-digit number (the smallest must not start with 0) and read them aloud.
