Explanation
Division can be written in several ways: 24 : 3 = 8, 24/3 = 8 (on a computer), or with 24 above a fraction bar and 3 below it. All of them mean the same: share 24 into 3 equal parts. Here 24 is the dividend, 3 the divisor and 8 the quotient. Multi-digit numbers are divided by long division. Check: quotient × divisor = dividend.
Worked examples
756 : 3 = 252. Check: 252 × 3 = 756, correct.
(3 600 + 480) : 8 = 4 080 : 8 = 510. The brackets are worked out first.
Class activity
“Same meaning, different writing”: write 48 : 6, 48/6 and “48 divided by 6” and 8 on cards. Children match the cards that mean the same and say the quotient.
