Shares and parts (practice)

Textbook: Part 3, lesson 75, pp. 13–15

Explanation

In a fraction the number below the line is the denominator: how many equal parts the whole was split into. The number above the line is the numerator: how many of those parts were taken. This kind of writing is a common fraction. In Uzbek we say the denominator first (o‘n oltidan yetti); in English we say 7/16 as “seven sixteenths”. To find a pattern in a row of fractions, look at how the numerator and denominator change.

Worked examples
In the fraction 5/12 the numerator is 5 and the denominator is 12: 5 of the 12 equal parts.
In the row 1/7, 2/7, 3/7, ... the denominator stays the same and the numerator grows by 1. The next fraction is 4/7.
Class activity

“Fraction cards”: one child holds a numerator card, another a denominator card, and a third reads the fraction. Then they swap roles.
