Division (practice)
Textbook: Part 3, lesson 73, pp. 7–9
GoalDivision with a remainder: the remainder is always smaller than the divisor; checking division; cases with no remainder.
New words
remainder · qoldiqwithout remainder · qoldiqsizfull box · to‘la qutisharing equally · teng taqsimlash
Explanation
If one number cannot be divided exactly by another, a remainder is left. The remainder is always smaller than the divisor. Check: quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend. When sharing things equally, the things left over are the remainder.
Worked examples
47 : 6 = 7 remainder 5. Check: 7 × 6 + 5 = 47.
100 : 8 = 12 remainder 4, because 12 × 8 = 96 and 100 − 96 = 4. The remainder 4 < 8.
Class activity
“How many are left?”: the teacher puts 20–30 items (pencils, buttons) on a table. Groups make piles of 3, 4 and 5 each time and say and write the remainder.
