The multiplication table

Textbook: Part 3, lesson 113, pp. 88–89
GoalThe multiplication table: find products by row, column and address; use the table for division.
New words
table · jadvalrow · satrcolumn · ustunaddress · manzil
Explanation

We write all the times tables in one table. To find a product we look where a row and a column cross: row 6 and column 8 give 48. The table is a mirror: a × b = b × a. For division: 48 : 6 – find 48 in row 6 and read the column number: 8. On the diagonal stand 1, 4, 9, 16, ... 100.

Worked examples
Row 6, column 8 is 48. So 6 × 8 = 48 and 48 : 6 = 8.
The diagonal numbers are 1 × 1, 2 × 2, 3 × 3, ... 10 × 10.
Class activity

“Address in the table”: children draw a big table. One says an address (row 4, column 7), another finds the product; then they swap roles.
