Explanation

Sharing things equally is division. In 10 : 2 = 5, 10 is the dividend, 2 is the divisor and 5 is the quotient. To divide a by b we find which number must be added b times to get a. 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10, so 10 : 2 = 5.

Worked examples
Sharing 20 pencils equally between 2 girls gives 20 : 2 = 10 each.
Sharing 15 thousand so‘m between 3 girls gives 15 : 3 = 5 thousand each.
Class activity

“Share equally”: children share 12 pencils among 2, 3, 4 and 6 children and say the quotient each time.
