Even and odd numbers

Explanation

Even numbers are divisible by 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, ... Odd numbers are not divisible by 2 and cannot be split into two equal parts: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, ... We tell by the last digit: ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 means even; ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 means odd.

Worked examples
24 is even (24 : 2 = 12), 37 is odd.
When children count off and the odd numbers step forward, the even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8) stay in place.
Class activity

“Count off”: children count from 1 to 10. Those with odd numbers step forward, those with even numbers stay. Then they swap.
