Layers in PhotoShop and how to use them
Textbook: pp. 36–41
GoalWorks with the Layers palette: creates a layer, changes the order, shows or hides it, sets its opacity, merges layers and uses masks and groups.
New words
layer: a transparent sheet on which part of a picture lies; layers stack into one image · qatlamBackground layer: the bottom layer of a picture, partly locked until you unlock it · Background (fon qatlami)Opacity: how strongly a layer covers what is under it, 0–100% · Opacity (shaffofmaslik)layer mask: hides or reveals parts of a layer without deleting pixels · niqob (Layer Mask)
Explanation
A layer is like a sheet of transparent paper: part of the picture lies on it, and the layers stacked together make one whole picture. Each layer can be edited separately without touching the others, which is why so much of PhotoShop's power is in layers: a new picture, text or a cut-out part usually lands on a new layer automatically, and in current versions there can be hundreds of layers. In the Layers palette (Window → Layers or F7) every layer has an eye icon (show/hide), Opacity (0–100%), lock, link, style (fx), mask, adjustment layer, group, new-layer and delete buttons. A layer higher up covers those below it, and dragging a layer with the mouse changes the order. The bottom Background layer is partly locked: its position cannot be changed, but double-clicking it turns it into an ordinary layer. A mask hides part of a layer without deleting it: white shows, black hides, so a mistake is easy to correct. An adjustment layer changes colour and brightness without touching the original pixels. When there are many layers they can be put into a group and controlled like one layer; Ctrl+E (Merge Down) merges a layer with the one below. If a layered work is saved as PSD the layers are kept; exported to JPEG or PNG the picture becomes flat.
Worked examples
A poster: the Background holds the backdrop photo, layer 2 the athlete's picture (cut out and pasted with Ctrl+V), layer 3 the headline text. To shift the athlete to the right, only layer 2 is selected and dragged with the Move tool (V) – the backdrop and text stay as they are. If the headline gets in the way for a moment, its eye icon is clicked.
An opacity calculation: if a channel value is 200 in the upper layer and 100 in the lower one and Opacity = 30%, the result is 0.3·200 + 0.7·100 = 60 + 70 = 130. At 100% opacity the result is 200 and at 0% it is 100 (the upper layer is invisible).
Class activity
“Layer tower”: each group stacks cards (background, picture, text, shadow) in the right order, proves which layer must go on top so that everything is visible, then says what changes if the order is swapped.
Practice
1
Why can the position of the Background layer not be changed by dragging, and how can this be changed?
It is partly locked; double-clicking it turns it into an ordinary layer.
2
A channel value is 80 in the upper layer and 240 in the lower one, with Opacity = 25%. What is the result?
200
3
A poster has 1 Background, 3 picture layers, 2 text layers and 1 shape layer. After merging the three picture layers into one, how many layers remain?
5
4
Why is hiding part of a layer with a mask handier than erasing it?
A mask deletes no pixels: a spot hidden with black can be shown again at any time by painting the mask white.
