Explanation

A picture often needs a headline, a signature or a caption. The type tools sit under one button (key T): horizontal and vertical type and their mask versions (Type Mask), which make a selection in the shape of the text instead. One click where the text should go starts point text, meant for short writing such as a title or signature; dragging a box makes paragraph text, handy for long text; the right-click menu converts one into the other. The options bar sets the font, style (Regular, Bold, Italic), size (points, pt), anti-aliasing, alignment and colour; the fuller settings are in the Character and Paragraph panels. To finish typing press Ctrl+Enter or the check mark, to cancel press Esc. The text sits on its own text layer and stays sharp as a vector until it is rasterised. Warp Text bends text into 15 shapes such as Arc, Wave and Flag; Layer Style (fx) adds ready effects such as shadow, stroke and glow, and the Styles panel offers a set of ready styles. 1 point = 1/72 inch, so the height of text in pixels is about pt·ppi:72 (12 pt at 300 ppi ≈ 50 px). For readability the text and background colours should contrast; mind the licences of fonts and check that Uzbek letters (o‘, g‘) display correctly on your system.

Worked examples
A poster headline: press T, set the font to Bold, the size to 48 pt and the colour to white, click once on the picture, type “School exhibition” and finish with Ctrl+Enter. Then add a shadow with Layer → Layer Style → Drop Shadow and the Arc style in Warp Text. These changes stay on the text layer.
A calculation: in a poster file of 300 ppi, text of 18 pt is 18·300:72 = 75 pixels high; at 150 ppi the same text is 18·150:72 = 37.5 pixels. So text of the same point size is larger in pixels in a file of higher density, but comes out the same size on paper.
Class activity

“Poster in 10 minutes”: pairs make a poster with a background for a school event: a headline, a date, a short text (different size and colour) and at least one style; classmates judge contrast and readability.

Practice
1
Which four tools are in the type tool group?
2
How many pixels high is 18 pt text in a 300 ppi file?
3
Name two ways to finish typing and two ways to cancel it.
4
Why is it better to keep text on a text layer until it is rasterised?
