Adding geometric shapes and vector objects to an image
Textbook: pp. 55–58
GoalPlaces geometric shapes on an image with the shape tools, changes their settings, draws a path with the Pen tool and turns it into a selection or a shape.
New words
shape layer: a layer holding a vector shape that stays sharp at any size · shakl qatlamiPen: a tool that draws a path (contour) from anchor points and curved or straight segments · Pen (Pat)anchor point: a point of a path that the line passes through; handles on it bend the curve · tayanch nuqtapath: a vector outline that can become a selection, a mask or a shape · kontur (path)
Explanation
Although PhotoShop is a raster editor, it also works with vector elements. The shape tool group (key U) has six tools: rectangle, rounded rectangle, ellipse, regular polygon, line segment and Custom Shape; in the newest versions corner rounding has become a setting of the rectangle and a triangle tool has been added. The options bar sets the type of result: Shape (a shape layer), Path (an outline) or Pixels (ordinary pixels), as well as the inner colour (Fill), the border colour and thickness (Stroke), the size (W, H), the corner radius and the number of sides of the polygon. A shape layer is vector, so it does not blur when enlarged. Holding Shift while dragging gives a square or a circle. The Pen tool (key P) creates a path: points that are clicked are joined by straight segments, while clicking and dragging makes handles appear at the anchor point and gives a curve (a Bézier curve); the Pen group also has Freeform Pen, Add Anchor Point, Delete Anchor Point and Convert Point (corner/smooth). A path is kept in the Paths palette and can be turned into a selection (Ctrl+Enter), a mask or a geometric shape; so objects with curved edges can be selected very precisely with the Pen. The Pen needs skill, so practise more.
Worked examples
Making a badge: with the ellipse tool and Shift draw a 300×300 pixel circle (Fill – blue, Stroke – white, 8 px); on a new layer place a five-sided polygon or a star from Custom Shape. Because both shapes are vector, the edges stay sharp even if the badge is enlarged 5 times.
Selecting with the Pen: we place anchor points along the edge of a jug picture, click and drag at curved places, close the path by clicking the starting point, turn it into a selection with Ctrl+Enter and copy it into another picture with Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V. The interior angle of a regular octagon is (8–2)·180:8 = 135°.
Class activity
“Badge workshop”: each pair draws a vector badge (a circle, a polygon and text) for a school club, then scales it to 10% and 400% and checks that the edges stay sharp.
