PhotoShop's toolbar and palettes
Textbook: pp. 14–18
GoalWorks with the toolbar and palettes: chooses a tool, shows and hides a palette, changes the zoom and moves around the picture.
New words
toolbar: the strip of tool buttons; one button often hides several related tools · uskunalar panelipalette (panel): a small window with extra features, such as Layers, Channels or Navigator · palitra (panel)Hand tool: moves the picture inside the window without changing it · Hand (Dasta)Navigator: a palette with a thumbnail and a slider for changing the zoom · Navigator
Explanation
The toolbar holds dozens of tools, but they are grouped to save space: a small triangle in the corner of a button means that more tools are hidden under it. To open a group, hold the button or right-click it; each group has one Latin letter (for example M – selection, L – lasso, B – brush, T – text), and pressing the letter with Shift cycles through the tools of the group. The chosen tool stays chosen after the work is done, so it is a good habit to return to a harmless tool such as Hand to avoid spoiling the picture by accident. Palettes are extra windows such as Layers, Channels, History, Navigator and Info; they are shown by ticking the item in the Window menu and hidden by unticking it. To change the zoom use Ctrl+“+” and Ctrl+“–”, Ctrl+0 to fit the picture on the screen and Ctrl+1 for 100%; even when another tool is active, holding the space bar lets you move the picture like the Hand tool. In the Navigator palette a red frame shows the part of the picture visible on the screen and can be dragged to move the view.
Worked examples
To retouch an eye in a large photo: zoom to 400% with Ctrl+“+”, move to the right spot with the Hand tool (or the space bar), and when finished fit the whole picture on the screen with Ctrl+0.
Showing the Info palette: Window → Info (or F8). Moving the mouse pointer over the picture shows the X, Y coordinates and the R, G, B values of that point in the palette. This is handy for measuring a colour exactly.
Class activity
“Tool hunt”: the teacher says what a tool does; students find it on the toolbar and show its letter and group; the fastest gets a point.
Practice
1
What does the small triangle in the corner of a tool button mean?
More tools are hidden under this button.
2
Which key combinations fit the picture on the screen and show it at 100%?
Ctrl+0 and Ctrl+1.
3
A picture is zoomed to 400%. Name two ways to move to another part without changing it.
Drag with the Hand tool, or hold the space bar and drag; or drag the Navigator frame.
4
Why is it recommended to go back to a harmless tool such as Hand after finishing a job?
The chosen tool stays active, so an accidental click could make an unwanted change to the picture.
