Working with the brush and pencil

Textbook: pp. 51–54
GoalChanges the settings of the Brush and Pencil tools (size, hardness, opacity, spacing), draws and paints with them and explains the difference between them.
New words
Brush: a painting tool whose edge can be soft and whose effect depends on settings such as opacity and flow · Brush (Mo‘yqalam)Pencil: a drawing tool that makes crisp, hard-edged lines · Pencil (Qalam)Hardness: how sharp the edge of a brush mark is, from 0% (soft) to 100% (hard) · Hardness (qattiqlik)Spacing: the distance between neighbouring brush marks, in percent of brush size · Spacing (oraliq)
Explanation

Among PhotoShop users there are many artists and designers as well as photographers, and they need to draw new pictures as well as process ready ones. The main drawing tools are Brush and Pencil; they sit under one button (together with Mixer Brush and Color Replacement), are called with the B key and switched with Shift+B; the Line tool for straight lines is in the shapes group (U). The Brush options bar has the shape and size, Mode (how colours blend), Opacity, Flow and the airbrush button; the detailed settings are in the Brush Settings panel (F5): shape, hardness, angle, roundness and the distance between marks (Spacing). At Hardness 100% the edge is sharp, at 0% it is soft; at Spacing 100% the marks only just touch, and if it is reduced the line becomes continuous. The look of a brush mark depends on speed, pressure and airbrush (with a graphics tablet pressure is also taken into account), while the Pencil draws a hard-edged, crisp line and such parameters do not affect its result. The colour is the Foreground colour. Useful keys: [ and ] make the brush smaller and larger; clicking two points with Shift held draws a straight segment, and dragging with Shift held gives a horizontal or vertical line; Alt turns on the Eyedropper for a moment to take a colour from the picture. It is recommended to draw on a separate layer: if you make a mistake, you only fix that layer.

Worked examples
Drawing grass: create a new layer, choose a ready grass-blade tip in Brush Settings, make the foreground colour green and paint; hold Alt to take another green shade from the picture and paint again. For a straight line, click the first point and Shift-click the last.
A calculation: if the brush diameter is 70 pixels and Spacing = 50%, the marks are placed every 70·50:100 = 35 pixels; on a 420-pixel line there are 420:35 + 1 = 13 marks. At Opacity = 50% a single stroke covers 50%; if the same place is passed over a second time, the coverage becomes 100 – (50·50):100 = 75%.
Class activity

“Same line”: pairs draw a line of the same length with the Brush (Hardness 100%), the Brush (Hardness 0%) and the Pencil; they zoom in to compare the edges and sketch the difference in their notebooks.

Practice
1
What is the main difference between the Brush and Pencil tools?
2
A brush is 80 pixels in diameter with Spacing = 50%. How many marks are on a 400-pixel line (counting the first one)?
3
A brush with Opacity = 50% passes over the same spot twice (in separate strokes). What is the coverage in percent?
4
Why is it handy to draw on a separate layer?
